How much is tax, title and license in Florida?
Tax, title and license is the phrase most dealers use for everything you pay on top of the price of the car. In Florida it means the registration fee, the title fee, the plate fee, any county charge, and the sales or use tax on the purchase.
Here is what it works out to at common prices. These are real figures from the calculator above, worked out for a used car with no trade-in, first registration in Florida.
| Purchase price | Fees | Tax | Tax, title and license |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3,000 car | $360.75 | $210 | $570.75 |
| $5,000 car | $360.75 | $350 | $710.75 |
| $6,000 car | $360.75 | $410 | $770.75 |
| $10,000 car | $360.75 | $650 | $1,010.75 |
| $15,000 car | $360.75 | $950 | $1,310.75 |
| $20,000 car | $360.75 | $1,250 | $1,610.75 |
| $30,000 car | $360.75 | $1,850 | $2,210.75 |
| $40,000 car | $360.75 | $2,450 | $2,810.75 |
Tax shown at the Florida state rate, plus the typical local rate of 1%. Your own local rate may be higher or lower.
Sales tax on a used car in Florida
The state rate is 6%. source 2 Local rates add between 0% and 1.5% on top, set by where you live rather than where you bought the car.
Tax is charged on what you actually paid for the vehicle.
The local surtax only applies to the first $5,000 of the price. Above that the surtax stops growing, so on an expensive car the effective rate falls back towards the state rate.
Buying private versus buying from a dealer. The tax is the same either way. What changes is who collects it. A dealer adds it to your paperwork. On a private sale you pay it yourself when you go in to title the vehicle, so it is a bill that lands all at once.
Does a trade-in reduce your tax in Florida?
Yes. Florida subtracts the trade-in allowance from the price before the tax is worked out. The bigger the trade-in, the smaller the tax bill.
Buy a $28,000 car and hand over a trade-in worth $8,000 and you are taxed on $20,000, not $28,000. That is $480 you do not pay.
One catch worth knowing. The credit usually only applies when the trade and the purchase happen as a single deal with the same dealer. Sell your old car privately first and you get the cash but you lose the tax break.
A worked example
A used car at $28,000 with a $6,000 trade-in, weighing 3,200 lbs, registered for the first time in Florida:
| Registration fee | $22.50 |
| Title fee (used vehicle) | $85.25 |
| Licence plate fee | $28 |
| Initial registration fee | $225 |
| Florida sales tax (6%) | $1,320 |
| Local surtax (1%) | $50 |
| Total due today | $1,730.75 |
Note the tax line. It is charged on $22,000 rather than $28,000, because the $6,000 trade-in comes off first. That saves $360.
Title transfer fee in Florida
The title is the document that says who owns the vehicle. Registration is what lets you drive it on the road. They are two different things and you pay for both.
| Transaction | Fee |
|---|---|
| Title, new vehicle source 1 | $77.25 |
| Title, used vehicle source 1 | $85.25 |
| Title transfer or duplicate source 1 | $75.25 |
| Lien recording source 1 | $2 |
FLHSMV lists transfer or duplicate title at $75.25. A used vehicle titled in Florida for the first time is the $85.25 figure above.
A title transfer is its own visit with its own paperwork. If you are buying private, do not leave it to the seller. The title has to be signed over to you and lodged with FLHSMV within the time Florida allows, or a late fee starts running.
How much are license plates in Florida?
A standard plate is $28. source 1 Original or replacement licence plate fee.
Personalised and speciality plates cost more, and the extra is usually an annual charge rather than a one-off. Charity and university plates work the same way, with part of the money going to the cause on the plate. FLHSMV publishes the full list of plate designs and what each one adds.
People use the words plate, tag and sticker for different things depending on where they grew up. The metal plate is issued once. The sticker or decal that proves your registration is current is what gets replaced each time you renew.
Electric vehicle fee in Florida
The FLHSMV fee schedule lists no separate electric vehicle fee. If that changes we will update this page and say when we checked.
Most states now charge electric vehicles an annual fee to make up for the fuel tax they do not pay. Florida is one of the places where it is either not charged or not published as a separate line.
Registration renewal cost in Florida
Renewal is much cheaper than the first registration, because the tax and the title fee are one-off. What comes back every year is the registration itself and anything charged annually with it.
On the example car above, renewal in Florida is about $22.50 a year. Switch the calculator at the top of the page to Renewal to see your own figure.
Renew late and it costs more. FLHSMV adds a penalty that climbs the longer you leave it, and the amounts are set out further down this page.
Registering a car in Florida from another state
Moving in with a car you already own is a different transaction from buying one. You are not making a purchase, so there is usually no full sales tax to pay on it again.
Most states either charge nothing extra or charge the difference between their rate and the rate you already paid where you bought the car. FLHSMV sets out how Florida handles it.
What you will still pay is the title transfer, the plate, and the registration itself. Expect an inspection or a check that the VIN on the car matches the title, since Florida has not seen this vehicle before.
There is normally a deadline. Most states give a new resident somewhere between 10 and 90 days to register, and the clock starts when you take a job or sign a lease, not when you feel settled. Check FLHSMV's own figure before you let it slide.
What happens if you register late in Florida
FLHSMV charges a $20.00 late title fee if you do not apply for the title within the time allowed after the sale. Registration penalties are set separately by your county tax collector. source 1
The penalty is not the only cost. Driving on an expired registration is a ticket in every state, and in some places the car can be towed. If you are selling, a lapsed registration slows the whole transfer down.
If you have already missed the date, the fix is the same everywhere. Pay it, do not wait for a reminder that is not coming, and keep the receipt.
Gifts, family transfers and exemptions
Not every change of owner is a sale, and the tax follows what actually happened rather than what the paperwork looks like.
FLHSMV does not publish flat figures for gift and family transfers in a form we can verify, so we are not showing any. Ask your county office before you write anything on the title.
Other situations that change what you pay:
- Inherited vehicle. Usually treated as a transfer rather than a sale, with the estate paperwork standing in for a bill of sale.
- Active duty military. Many states let service members keep their home state registration, or waive part of the fee. It is never automatic, you have to claim it.
- Disabled veteran. Most states reduce or waive the registration fee and issue a specific plate. Proof of the disability rating is required.
- Salvage or rebuilt title. A separate inspection and a different title type, which affects what you can insure it for.
- Temporary permit. A short term tag that lets you drive the car home or to an inspection before the full registration is done.
Do not write "gift" on a bill of sale to dodge the tax on a real sale. Every state treats that as fraud, and the value they use if they catch it is their number, not yours.
What you need to bring to FLHSMV
The list changes with the transaction, but almost every counter visit needs these:
- The title certificate, signed over to you by the seller. On a brand new car this is the manufacturer's certificate of origin instead.
- A bill of sale showing the price, the date and both names. This is what the tax is worked out from on a private sale.
- An odometer disclosure, which is usually printed on the title itself. Federal law requires it on most vehicles under 20 years old.
- Proof of insurance that meets the Florida minimum, in your name, for this vehicle.
- Photo identification, and proof of your Florida address if your licence is from somewhere else.
- Payment. Many county offices do not take credit cards, or charge extra for them.
Depending on the vehicle and the county you may also need an inspection certificate, an emissions or smog test, or a VIN verification. FLHSMV publishes the checklist for each transaction type, and it is worth reading it the day before rather than in the queue.
Why is car registration so expensive in Florida?
Because most of what you are paying is not registration. On a $28,000 car in Florida, tax is about 83% of the total bill. The registration fee itself is the small line.
Three things drive the number up:
- The tax on the purchase. Charged once, on the price of the car, at the same sort of rate as anything else you buy.
- Fees you did not expect. County charges, processing fees and inspection fees are small on their own and add up at the counter.
- Local rates. Two people buying the same car pay different amounts because the local rate follows the buyer's address.
The part you can actually control is the timing and the paperwork. Registering late adds penalties, getting the trade-in structured as one transaction protects the credit where one exists, and knowing the figure before you walk in stops a dealer's estimate from becoming the number you accept.
Fee terms explained
The wording on a registration bill is not consistent between states, which is half of why the whole thing is confusing. Here is what the common terms mean.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Registration fee | The annual charge for keeping the vehicle legal on the road. This is the part that comes round every year. |
| Title fee | A one-time charge for issuing the ownership document in your name. |
| Plate or tag fee | The charge for the metal plate. Some states fold it into registration, some bill it separately. |
| Sales tax | Tax on the purchase, charged once, usually collected by the dealer or at the counter on a private sale. |
| Use tax | The same tax under a different name, charged when you bring in a vehicle you bought somewhere else. |
| Vehicle license fee (VLF) | A yearly fee worked out as a percentage of what the vehicle is worth. California is the best known example. |
| Ad valorem tax | Latin for "by value". A yearly property style tax on the car, used in Georgia, Virginia and several other states. |
| Excise tax | Another name for a value based annual vehicle tax, used in states like Indiana and Massachusetts. |
| Personal property tax | A county level tax on the car as property, billed separately from registration in some states. |
| Documentation fee | The dealer's own charge for handling the paperwork. It is not a government fee, and in some states it is capped. |
| Lien recording fee | Charged when a lender is named on the title because the car is financed. |
| Wheel tax | A flat local charge per vehicle, used by some counties and cities on top of the state fee. |
| Transfer fee | What you pay to move the title from the seller's name into yours. |
| Temporary tag | A short term permit that lets you drive before the full registration is issued. |
| Proration | Charging only part of the year when your registration period does not start in a full month. |
| Trade-in tax credit | Subtracting the trade-in value from the price before the tax is worked out. Some states allow it, some do not, and some cap it. |
| Standard Presumptive Value | The state's own estimate of what a used vehicle is worth, used instead of the sale price when the state thinks the price was too low. |
| Grace period | The window after your registration expires before penalties start. Some states have one, many do not. |
You will also see the agency called different things state to state: DMV in most places, BMV in Indiana and Ohio, MVD in Arizona and New Mexico, MVA in Maryland, RMV in Massachusetts, the Secretary of State in Michigan and Illinois, the county tax collector in Florida and the county treasurer in Colorado and Kansas. In Florida it is FLHSMV.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my vehicle registration fees in Florida?
Add five things: the registration fee, the title fee, the plate fee, any county charge, and the sales or use tax on what you paid for the vehicle. The calculator at the top of this page does it line by line from FLHSMV's own published figures and shows you the source for each number.
How do I calculate tax, title and license in Florida?
Tax, title and license means the whole bill on top of the car price. Work out the tax first, since it is the biggest part, then add the flat fees. In Florida the state tax rate is 6% plus your local rate. The table in the tax, title and license section above shows the total at common prices.
How much will tax, title and license be in Florida?
On a $20,000 used car with no trade-in it comes to about $1,610.75 in Florida, made up of $360.75 in fees and $1,250 in tax. Change the price in the calculator for your own figure.
How much does it cost to register a car in Florida?
The fixed fees are small. The tax on the purchase is what makes up most of the bill. Registration is charged on a sliding scale by vehicle weight. Enter your price above for a full breakdown, including what comes back each year.
How much is it to register a car in Florida if I bought it private?
The same fees apply, but nobody collects the tax for you. A dealer rolls it into the paperwork. On a private sale you pay it yourself at the counter when you title the vehicle, so the whole amount lands in one go.
Is car registration a one-time fee?
No. The title fee and the plate fee are one-time and the tax is paid once on the purchase, but the registration fee comes round every year. The calculator separates the two so you can see what you pay today and what you pay each year after that.
Does my trade-in reduce the sales tax in Florida?
Yes. Florida subtracts the trade-in allowance from the price before tax is worked out, so a bigger trade-in means a smaller tax bill. The trade and the purchase normally have to be one transaction with the same dealer.
Why is car registration so expensive in Florida?
Because most of it is not registration. Florida charges 6% tax plus a local rate on top on the purchase, and on a typical car that dwarfs every other line on the bill.
What are the requirements to register a car in Florida?
Generally the title signed over to you or a manufacturer's certificate of origin, a bill of sale, proof of Florida insurance, photo identification, an odometer disclosure and payment. Some counties also want an inspection or emissions certificate. FLHSMV publishes a checklist for each transaction type and it is worth reading it the day before.
How much is a title transfer in Florida?
$75.25. FLHSMV lists transfer or duplicate title at $75.25. A used vehicle titled in Florida for the first time is the $85.25 figure above.
How much are license plates in Florida?
$28 for a standard plate. Original or replacement licence plate fee. Personalised and speciality plates cost more, usually as an extra charge every year rather than once.
Do electric vehicles pay extra in Florida?
The FLHSMV fee schedule lists no separate electric vehicle fee.
How much is registration renewal in Florida?
About $22.50 a year on the example car. Renewal is much cheaper than first registration because the tax and the title fee are one-off. Switch the calculator to Renewal for your own figure.
What happens if I register my car late in Florida?
FLHSMV charges a $20.00 late title fee if you do not apply for the title within the time allowed after the sale. Registration penalties are set separately by your county tax collector. On top of the penalty, driving on an expired registration is a ticket, and in some places grounds for a tow.
Do I pay tax again if I move to Florida with a car I already own?
Usually not the full amount again. Most states either charge nothing extra or charge the difference between their rate and what you already paid elsewhere. You will still pay the title transfer, the plate and the registration. Check FLHSMV for how Florida handles it.
How accurate is this estimate?
Every figure comes from FLHSMV's own published fee schedule, linked in the sources at the bottom of this page, and was last checked on 2026-09-11. Where a fee varies by county or by address we say so and mark it as an estimate. Where a figure is not published in a form we can verify, we leave it out rather than guess at it. The agency's own figure at the counter is always the one that counts.
Where these numbers come from
We only publish a figure if we can point at the agency that set it.
